Adopting Intentionally – Day 3
For 31 Days I will blog about Adopting Intentionally, you can find an overview and links to daily posts here.
There are books about adoption. Lots of them, and once Andrew and I started talking about adoption, we went right to the book store. We bought one, the most comprehensive one we could find. It was incredibly helpful to have insight and an overview about adoption. We gave the book away and I do not know the title, but it was informative and very helpful. The book, The Essential Adoption Handbook seems similar, lots of practical answers.
We did additional reading and appreciated others perspectives on adoption. Adoption Without Fear was tremendously helpful. We also read Raising Adopted Children and Twenty Things Adopted Kids Wish Their Adoptive Parents Knew.
There are a number of movies and documentaries on Netflix now that are also informative. I would recommend Somewhere Between.
We attended a kind of open house at a local adoption agency, where we felt like impostors since we were not even really sure that it was a path we would want to take (looking back that is just who they want to be there).
And even after we decided, we headed to a conference on adoption where it felt surreal. Were we actually walking down this road?
Books, Open Houses, Movies, Conferences . . . Read, Go, See, Participate . . .
Even if adoption is only a slight possibility. Open your heart to that possibility.
And if you have decided to adopt. Intentionally become an expert. The whole process feels less scary and more natural when you are educated and prepared.
